Montenegro, meaning "Black Mountain" (Црна Гора in Serbian), is a mountainous country located in Southeast Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. This small European country boasts stunning scenery.
In the late 6th and early 7th centuries, Slavs migrated to the Balkan Peninsula. In the 9th century, they established the state of Duklja in the region of present-day Montenegro. In 1910, the Kingdom of Montenegro was established. After World War I, Montenegro was incorporated into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929). In 1945, the Socialist Republic of Montenegro was established and, in 1963, it became a constituent republic of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. In 1992, with the breakup of Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (renamed Serbia and Montenegro on February 4, 2003). In 2006, Montenegro declared independence, restoring its pre-World War I status.
On June 28, 2006, the UN General Assembly admitted Montenegro as its 192nd member. Montenegro is a member of the World Trade Organization and the Union for the Mediterranean. On December 17, 2010, the EU granted Montenegro candidate status. On June 5, 2017, Montenegro officially became the 29th member of NATO.
